Get Involved

Our union will always be here for you. Always.

An increasing number of NYSUT members are taking an active interest in becoming involved in the work of the union and contributing to the cause.

You don't necessarily need to be political or knowledgable about the labor movement to get involved. Our members are continually creating new programs to advance union values, improve education in our state and help advance their careers.

Here are just a few of the ways you can get involved:

NYSUT Member Action Center

Join the Member Action Center

The Member Action Center (MAC) is NYSUT's activism and organizing entity. Through the MAC, we lobby our elected officials, raise awareness of education issues, and actively push to advance pro-education policies.

Become part of the conversation and make our voices heard in the halls of power.

NYSUT Social Justice

Support Social Justice

Social justice lies at the heart of unionism. As we fight to protect collective bargaining rights, strike back against education privatization and defend the rights of members, unions demonstrate the power of grassroots action and show how they can be vehicles for change within communities.

These include issues we witness daily in the classroom and workplace — such as the impact of poverty, hunger and bullying — and concerns with wider social implications, including immigration reform, LGBTQ awareness, domestic violence intervention and increasing the minimum wage. We want members to promote change within their communities, help educate students and community members about important social justice issues.

NYSUT Women's Committee

Start Your Own Women's Committee

The NYSUT Women’s Committee has four main goals: encourage more locals to develop in-house women’s committees; educate female members about the work of the union; highlight women-specific issues, including inequalities in pay, health care and education; and involve more union women in leadership roles.

Our statewide committee is composed of organizations on the local level. If your district does not yet have a women's committee, you can start one.

NYSUT Local Leadership

Volunteer for Local Leadership Roles

Our local leaders are the real heroes of our union. But, they're only human and, in addition to their union work, they have fulltime jobs! Even if you aren't interested in officially being part of your local union leadership, you can do a world of good by offering some time to help your local president with the work of the union.

Help plan and manage events or work with them to manage communications with other members. Just ask how you can help.
